Chullin 106 – Good Morning Raboisai Foam on Drinks Gemara: The daf continues the discussion of the danger of drinking foam from the top of a drink. If affected by foam from: • Wine → drink beer • Beer → drink water • Water → no remedy is given This connects to the saying: • “The poor get poorer” A poor person drinks water rather than wine, and if harmed by its foam, there is no remedy mentioned. Abaye – Things He Thought Were Physical Abaye lists several practices which he originally thought had simple physical explanations. His Rebbe taught him: • There were deeper concerns involving kishuf or shaydim. These included: • Not pulling a vegetable directly from a tied bundle • Not eating certain vegetables that fell on the floor • Not sitting underneath a roof drainpipe • Pouring away the top layer of water The Woman and the Boat Rav Chisda and Rabbah bar Rav Huna were travelling on a boat. A woman asked: • To sit with them They refused, and she: • Used kishuf to stop the boat. They said something themselves: • And released the boat. The woman said she could not successfully use kishuf against them because they avoided three practices: • Using earthenware for cleaning oneself • Killing lice directly on their clothing • Pulling vegetables directly from a tied bundle The Shayde and the Barrel of Wine Porters carrying a barrel of wine: • Rested it beneath a drainpipe • The barrel broke They understood that: • A shayde had caused the damage. They brought the case before: • Mar bar Rav Ashi He summoned the shayde, and when it failed to appear: • He placed it in cherem. The shayde eventually appeared and explained: • The barrel had been placed on its ear. Mar bar Rav Ashi’s Ruling The shayde was at fault. Why? • It had positioned itself in a place where people normally travel. Therefore: • It had to pay for the barrel. Why Was the Shayde Late Paying? The shayde did not return with payment at the agreed time. It explained: • Shaydim cannot simply take property belonging to someone • They had to find something hefker. This took time. Rav Pappa’s Shayde and the Water Rav Pappa sent a shayde that worked for him: • To fetch water. The shayde returned late because: • Other shaydim had drunk from the water • It waited for that water to pass downstream before collecting clean water. Rav Pappa then poured off the top of the water anyway. The shayde said: • Had it known this was Rav Pappa’s practice, it could have returned earlier. However, it had been reluctant to reveal: • The practices of the other shaydim. נטילת ידים Mayim Rishonim – The Restaurant Story During a period of persecution, a Jewish restaurant owner would determine whether a customer was Jewish. If Jewish: • He served kosher meat. If not: • He served non - kosher meat. One Jew did not wash his hands before eating. The owner assumed: • He was not Jewish. And served him: • Non - kosher meat. Lesson Neglecting Mayim Rishonim led to: • Eating forbidden food. Mayim Acharonim – The Story of Kidor Chachamim entrusted money to: • Kidor. Later: • Kidor denied ever receiving it. They noticed food remaining around his mouth and used it as a sign when speaking to his wife. They told her: • What Kidor had eaten. She believed this was a private sign from her husband and: • Returned their money. When Kidor discovered what had happened: • One version says he divorced her • Another says he killed her. Lesson Had Kidor properly cleaned his mouth: • The food would not have provided the sign. The Gemara therefore demonstrates the seriousness of: • Mayim Acharonim. Rav Dimi and Ravin – Which Version? Rav Dimi and Ravin give different versions of these stories. The more severe version has: • Mayim Rishonim neglected → chazir was eaten • Mayim Acharonim neglected → a woman was killed. The Gemara notes that chazir is particularly severe because it involves: • The prohibition of chazir • Neveilah Hot Water for Netilas Yadayim Machlokes: Chizkiyah: • Boiling hot water cannot be used for Netilas Yadayim. Rebbe Yochanan: • It can be used. Rebbe Yochanan supports his position from Rebbe Gamliel: • Who ate chullin with taharah • And used hot water for washing his hands. Chamei Teveria Chizkiyah says regarding the hot springs of Teveria: • Do not take the water into a vessel and wash your hands with it • But you may immerse your hands directly in the spring. Rebbe Yochanan discusses immersing: • Even the entire body in Chamei Teveria. Rav Pappa Explains the Machlokes Rav Pappa clarifies: When the Chamei Teveria water is: • In its natural place Everyone agrees: • Immersing the hands works. When the water is: • Taken into a vessel Everyone agrees: • It cannot be used for washing. Where Do They Disagree? The machlokes is when: • The spring water is channelled into another area. One view is concerned: • It may look like washing from a vessel. The other: • Does not make this gezeirah. Water Unfit for an Animal If water becomes so unpleasant that: • An animal would not drink it Then: In a vessel: • It is invalid for Netilas Yadayim. In the ground: • It can still be valid for immersing the hands. Reason Water in the ground can retain: • The status of mikvah water. Why Do We Wash Before Eating? Rav Yitzchak bar Ashyan explains: • Netilas Yadayim for chullin was instituted because of terumah. Purpose Kohanim needed to become accustomed to: • Keeping their hands tahor • Before eating terumah. The practice was therefore established: • Even for ordinary chullin. Netilas Yadayim Is Also a Mitzvah Another reason given: • It is a mitzvah. Meaning: • A mitzvah to listen to the words of the Chachamim. The Pasuk of the Zav The Gemara brings the pasuk concerning a zav: • Who did not wash his hands in water. Question A zav cannot become tahor merely by: • Washing his hands. He requires: • Immersion of his entire body. Therefore, the pasuk is not literally teaching that handwashing purifies a zav. Rather: • It serves as an asmachta for Netilas Yadayim. Washing for Fruit Rebbe Elazar in the name of Rebbe Oshaya: • Washing the hands for ordinary fruit is only for cleanliness. It is not: • A halachic requirement like washing for bread. Rav Nachman goes further: • One should not unnecessarily treat washing for ordinary dry fruit as an obligatory chumrah. The Basket of Fruit – Three Lessons A basket of fruit was brought before two Amoraim. They: • Ate without washing • Did not invite another person to join • Each made his own bracha. The Gemara derives: 1. Ordinary dry fruit does not require Netilas Yadayim. 2. There is no zimun for a meal of fruit. 3. When two people eat, each normally makes his own bracha rather than one being motzi the other. Wet Fruit The transcript adds an important practical qualification: If the fruit is wet: • One does wash the hands. According to the usual ruling: • No bracha is made. The Vilna Gaon: • Holds that a bracha is made. How Far Up Must You Wash? The daf finishes by discussing how much of the hands must be washed. For chullin: • Up to the joint. For terumah: • Further up the hand. For Kiddush Yadayim in the Beis Hamikdash: • Up to the wrist. The laws of: • Chatzitzah also apply when something forms a barrier on the hands. Key Chazarah • Foam on drinks and several everyday practices are discussed because of dangers involving kishuf and shaydim. • Rav Chisda and Rabbah bar Rav Huna resisted the woman’s kishuf on their boat. • Mar bar Rav Ashi held a shayde responsible for breaking the porters’ barrel. • The stories of the restaurant and Kidor demonstrate the seriousness of Mayim Rishonim and Mayim Acharonim. • Chizkiyah and Rebbe Yochanan disagree about very hot water for Netilas Yadayim. • Chamei Teveria works for immersing the hands in its natural place, but not when the water is removed into a vessel. • Netilas Yadayim for chullin was instituted to accustom Kohanim to the laws of terumah. • Ordinary dry fruit does not require Netilas Yadayim; wet fruit is different. • The required area of washing differs for chullin, terumah and Kiddush Yadayim in the Beis Hamikdash.
