Menachos 13 – Good Morning Raboisai Pigul in a Minchah – Combining Different “Eatings” The daf focuses on pigul created through machshavah during kemitzah. A Minchah has two forms of consumption : • Human eating → the shirayim • Mizbeach “eating” → the kemitzah Key question: Can different types of eating combine to create pigul? Full K’zayis vs. Two Half K’zaysim Clear case: • If the Kohen thinks: o “I will eat a full k’zayis of shirayim tomorrow ” → Pigul (chutz la’zman, chiyuv kares) Also clear: • If he thinks: o “I will burn the kemitzah tomorrow ” → Pigul (Mizbeach eating counts as achilah) But what about splitting ? Half + Half — Do They Combine? Case: • Half a k’zayis: o From shirayim (human eating) • Half a k’zayis: o From kemitzah (Mizbeach eating) If the Kohen plans: • To eat half • And burn half → These do NOT combine Reason: • They are two different types of consumption • Human eating ≠ Mizbeach eating Thus: No pigul in this case. What If He Plans to Eat Both? New case: • Half k’zayis from shirayim • Half k’zayis from kemitzah • And he plans to eat both as food Even though: • Kemitzah is not normally eaten This becomes a machlokes : • Rabbi Eliezer : o They do combine o Since both are treated as human eating → Pigul applies • Chachamim: o They do not combine o Because one is not derech achilah Principle: “ שֶׁלֹּא כְּדֶׁר ְֶׁך אֲכִילָה ” If something is consumed: • Not in its normal way • That weakens its ability to combine Thus: • Eating kemitzah as food is abnormal • This limits pigul combinations Two Wrong Thoughts — Still Pigul Important rule revisited: • If one thinks: o Chutz la’zman and o Chutz la’makom Order matters: • Chutz la’zman first → pigul stands • Chutz la’makom first → only pasul, no kares This applies to Minchah exactly as in Zevachim. Levonah – Same or Different from Kemitzah? A Minchah has two matirim : 1. Kemitzah 2. Levonah Each is 50% of the matir . Question: • Can pigul apply if the Kohen thinks about only one of them being burned late? Answer: • Yes • Even one matir is enough to create pigul Chiddush: Pigul does not require thinking about the entire matir. Why Levonah Is Different from Eimurim Challenge: • By animal korbanos: o Thinking about burning eimurim late → pigul with kares • Why would levonah be any different? Answer: • Eimurim come from the same animal • Levonah comes from a separate source This difference matters for: • Combining thoughts • Applying kares One Does Not Prevent the Other Critical yesod: • Kemitzah prevents eating shirayim • Levonah does not prevent kemitzah • Either can be burned first Therefore: • They are not fully interdependent • This affects how pigul applies Two Bezichin of Lechem HaPanim Parallel case: • Two spoonfuls of levonah (bezichin) • Both sit on one shulchan Question: • Are they considered one unit ? Havah amina: • Since the shulchan unites them → maybe yes Maskanah: • Still treated as separate • One does not create pigul for the other Moving Levonah — Holachah by Hand If a Yisrael moves levonah: • From one vessel to another • Closer to the Mizbeach This counts as: • Holachah • One of the four avodos Since a Yisrael may not perform holachah: → The Minchah becomes pasul Key chiddush: Movement by hand is considered holachah, just like walking with one’s feet. The Four Avodos of a Minchah Reaffirmed Pigul can occur during any of the four: 1. Kemitzah 2. Nesinah b’kli 3. Holachah 4. Haktarah Even placing the kemitzah into a kli: • Is a full avodah • Because the kli shares creates kedushah Thus: Nesinah b’kli parallels kabbalas ha’dam . Takeaway – Menachos 13 • Pigul applies to Minchah like animal korbanos • Mizbeach “eating” counts as achilah • Different types of eating usually do not combine • Rabbi Eliezer allows combination if both are treated as eating • One matir is enough to create pigul • Levonah differs from eimurim in source and function • Movement toward the Mizbeach = holachah • A Yisrael performing holachah invalidates • All four Minchah avodos can generate pigul לעילוי נשמת אמי מורתי רות בת הרב מנחם מנדל
