Menachos 14 – Good Morning Raboisai Two Sheep, Two Breads – The Matir Concept On Shavuos , two offerings are brought together: • Two sheep • Two loaves of bread ( שְׁתֵּי הַלֶּחֶּם ) The key rule: The sheep are the matir that permits the bread to be eaten. Since both sheep are required: • Each sheep is 50% of the matir • Without both, the bread remains forbidden This becomes the model case for the entire daf. Parallel Case – Minchah: Kemitzah and Levonah A Minchah also has two matirim : 1. Kemitzah 2. Levonah Only after both are burned: • The shirayim may be eaten Each one alone is only half a matir , similar to the two sheep of Shavuos. Pigul on Part of the Bread – Does It Spread? Case: • The Kohen has pigul intent • He plans to eat only one loaf late Rabbi Yosi : • Pigul applies only to what he intended • The second loaf becomes pasul , not pigul (no כרת ) Chachamim : • Everything is treated as one unit • Pigul on one loaf → pigul on both This same dispute applies to: • Two bezichin of levonah • Other paired matirim Pigul on One Limb of an Animal Rav Huna teaches: • Pigul on the right thigh does not automatically spread to the left thigh Reason: • Each limb is considered its own guf • Similar to tumah : one limb can be tamei without the other This reinforces Rabbi Yosi’s approach: Pigul follows specific intent , not automatic spread. “ לעולם ” — Always Both Matirim Required The Gemara emphasizes the word לעולם : • Pigul requires intent during both sheep • Not just one Why? • Each sheep is only half a matir • You cannot create pigul with half a matir This excludes: • Rabbi Meir, who allows pigul with half a matir • And clarifies the Chachamim’s position Resolving a Textual Confusion The Gemara clarifies: • שְׁנֵּיהֶּם can refer to: o The two sheep (masculine) o Or the two breads (feminine) The conclusion: • Pigul must occur during both sheep • Once that happens, pigul intent on even one bread spreads to both (according to Chachamim) Shchitah and Zerikah – Do They Combine? New case: • Half a כזית intent during shchitah • Half a כזית intent during zerikah Result: • They combine • Because both are matirim But: • Kabbalah and holachah do not combine • Only avodos that actually permit eating count as matir Why No Gezeirah Here? Question: • Why not make a gezeirah from two sheep to other cases? Answer: • Chazal only make gezeiros where there is a real comparable case • There is no other true parallel to half - matir pigul Therefore: • No concern of confusion • No need for an added safeguard Pigul Cannot Apply to the Matir Itself Fundamental rule: • A matir cannot become pigul o Blood o Kemitzah o Levonah If pigul intent is expressed about the matir: • It is redirected to the item it permits o Blood → meat o Kemitzah → shirayim This explains how pigul can “transfer” without contradiction. Core Yesodos – Menachos 14 • Two sheep = one full matir for the bread • Two matirim are each only 50% • Pigul requires intent during both halves • Rabbi Yosi limits pigul to intended items • Chachamim allow pigul to spread once the matir is complete • Pigul cannot exist on a matir itself • Only true matirim combine across avodos לעילוי נשמת אמי מורתי רות בת הרב מנחם מנדל
