Menachos 53 – Good Morning Raboisai Chametz in Menachos Most מנחות must be מצה and may not contain חמץ . There are only two exceptions : • שתי הלחם brought on Shavuos • לחמי תודה (the breads of the thanksgiving offering) These breads must specifically be חמץ . The Gemara discusses how the chametz is created in these loaves. Two possibilities: 1. Fill the vessel with flour first , then add the leavening agent. 2. Place the leavening agent first , then add flour. Problem: • If flour is added after liquid, the exact measurement ( עשרון ) may be inaccurate. • The dough might absorb differently and the required measure could change. Thus the Gemara debates the correct procedure to ensure the exact shiur . Source That Menachos Must Be Matzah The Gemara asks: How do we know a מנחה must be מצה ? Although several pesukim mention מצות , the question is: Is it merely a mitzvah , or is it מעכב (essential)? The answer comes from the word: " תהיה " This word teaches: • The requirement is absolute • The Mincha must be matzah • If it becomes chametz, it is invalid . The Concept of Se’or The Gemara analyzes the status of שאור / סיאור — dough that has begun the process of fermentation. Two stages are described: 1. הכסיפו פניו – the dough changes color (pale stage) 2. קרני חגבים – cracks appear in the dough Opinions: רבי מאיר • Pale stage → לאו (malkos) • Cracked stage → כרת רבי יהודה • Neither stage is fully chametz • It remains essentially matzah status . The Gemara analyzes whether the Torah's requirement of matzah might be referring to these intermediate stages. Ultimately it concludes the verse requires fully matzah dough , excluding chametz. Guarding the Dough The Mishnah teaches that Menachos: • Are kneaded with warm water • Must be constantly worked and moved Why? To prevent the dough from becoming chametz . The Gemara learns this from the phrase: מצה תהיה It is interpreted as: • The dough must be actively guarded • It must remain alive and moving until baking This parallels the guarding of matzah for Pesach . The Importance of Yichus and Torah The Gemara relates an interaction involving Rabbi P'reida and a scholar with distinguished lineage. The discussion highlights: • Great lineage ( יחוס ) is honorable. • However, true greatness comes from Torah scholarship . If someone is: • A תלמיד חכם → great hono u r. • A תלמיד חכם whose father was also one → even greater. But lineage alone without Torah has no value. Drashos of Praise The Gemara presents poetic דרשות describing: • הקב״ה • ישראל • בית המקדש • ירושלים Through symbolic phrases such as: יבוא ידיד בן ידיד ויבנה ידיד לידיד בחלקו של ידיד Meaning: • שלמה המלך (beloved) • Son of דוד (beloved) • Builds the בית המקדש (beloved) • For הקב״ה (beloved) • In the portion of בנימין (beloved) Consolation for Exile The Gemara describes Avraham Avinu pleading for Klal Yisrael after their sins. He argues: • Perhaps they sinned accidentally. • Perhaps only a minority sinned. • Perhaps their ברית מילה should protect them. Eventually the Gemara concludes: Even though exile came, in the end Klal Yisrael will do תשובה . Like an olive tree that takes many years to produce fruit, the final result will be good. Yesodos of the Daf • Most מנחות must be matzah , not chametz. • The word תהיה teaches the requirement is מעכב . • Early fermentation stages ( שאור ) are debated between רבי מאיר and רבי יהודה . • The dough must be actively guarded to prevent chametz. • Torah greatness surpasses lineage. • Ultimately Klal Yisrael will return in תשובה .
