Menachos 51 – Good Morning Raboisai The Kohen Gadol’s Minchah – Done Inside the Azarah Everything involved in preparing the מנחת חביתין of the Kohen Gadol must be done inside the Azarah: • לישתן – kneading • עריכתן – shaping/braiding • אפייתן – baking • טיגונן – frying All stages take place within the Mikdash. Does It Override Shabbos? Why does baking override Shabbos? Couldn’t it be prepared on Friday? Answer #1 (Rav Huna): The pasuk says “ תופיני תֵּפֶנָּה ” — it must be baked beautifully and fresh. If prepared the day before, it will not be as proper. Answer #2: The pasuk says “ תַּעֲשֶה ” — it must be done whenever required, even on Shabbos. Answer #3 (Abaye): The pasuk says “ סֹלֶת מִנְחָּה תָּמִיד ” — just like the Tamid overrides Shabbos, so too this Minchah. Why Can’t It Be Prepared the Day Before? The Minchah is placed in a kli shareis , which sanctifies it. Once sanctified, it cannot remain overnight ( לינה ). If baked Friday, it would become invalid by Shabbos morning. Therefore, it must be baked on Shabbos itself. How Much Oil Does It Require? The pasuk says “ בַּשָּמֶן ” . Normally, a standard Minchah requires לוג אחד of oil. If so, why mention oil here at all? It must be coming to add to the normal amount. We compare it to the Minchas Tamid (Nesachim), which requires שלשה לוגין לעשרון . Since the Kohen Gadol’s Minchah is also one עשרון , like the Tamid, we conclude: It requires שלשה לוגין of oil. Why Compare to the Tamid? Because both share: • תדיר – daily offering • דוחה שבת • דוחה טומאה • Same measure of flour ( עשרון אחד ) Thus, we learn oil from the Tamid, not from a voluntary Minchah. If the Kohen Gadol Dies Midday If the Kohen Gadol offered the morning half and died: The replacement must bring a full עשרון . • Half is offered. • Half is burned. The leftover half from the deceased Kohen Gadol is also burned. Two halves offered, two halves burned. Who Pays If There Is No Replacement? If the Kohen Gadol dies and no successor is appointed: According to Rabbi Yehudah – the heirs pay. According to Rabbi Shimon – the community pays. The final ruling: it comes from the ציבור , based on a takanah. Originally, heirs were required to pay. Later, Beis Din reverted to the communal model. “ כליל תקטר ” – Completely Burned The Kohen Gadol’s Minchah is entirely burned: • No portion is eaten. • Eating from it incurs an issur. • The entire Minchah must go on the Mizbeach. This applies both to Kohen Gadol and to the Minchas Chinuch of a regular Kohen. Yesodos of the Daf • All preparation of Minchas Chavitin is inside the Azarah. • It overrides Shabbos and Tumah. • It requires three log of oil. • It mirrors the Tamid structure. • If Kohen Gadol dies, full replacement Minchah is required. • Payment ultimately comes from the community. • The Minchah is entirely burned ( כליל ).
