Menachos 75 – Good Morning Raboisai Three Applications of Oil Menachos prepared in a כלי require three applications of oil : • נתינת שמן בכלי – placing oil in the kli first • בלילה – mixing oil into the flour • יציקה – pouring oil at the end Order: Oil → flour → mix → bake → break → final oil This is the standard process for most Menachos. Exception – Minchas Ma’afah The Mincha baked in an oven ( מאפה תנור ) is different: • It does not receive יציקה (final pouring) • It only has the first two stages Not all Menachos follow the full 3 - step oil process. Chalos vs. Rekikin Two types of baked Menachos: • Chalos (thick loaves) • Rekikin (thin wafers) Differences: • Chalos → require בלילה (mixing oil) • Rekikin → require משיחה (smearing oil on top) Each type has its own unique oil application. How Is the Oil Applied? For Rekikin: • Oil is smeared in a specific shape ( כמין כי / כף / letter - like form) • Different opinions describe the exact shape Additionally: • Remaining oil may go to the Kohanim or be reused depending on the opinion Why Not Treat Them the Same? The Gemara asks: Why not apply both methods (mixing + smearing) to both types? Answer: The Torah consistently separates them: • Chalos → בלילה • Rekikin → משיחה Each follows its specific פסוק pattern , not logic alone. Breaking the Mincha ( פתיתה ) Rule: Any Mincha prepared in a kli requires breaking into pieces ( פתיתה ) Process: • Fold once → fold again → break into pieces Exception: • Minchas Kohen (and Kohen Gadol) → not broken , since it is fully burned (no Kemitza) How Much Breaking? You might think: • Keep breaking until very small crumbs But the Torah teaches: Only a limited number of breaks are required Not endless crumbling Bread Pieces – Hamotzi or Mezonos? A practical halacha: • If bread is broken and cooked : • If pieces are kezayis → still Hamotzi • If smaller → becomes Mezonos • If not cooked: • Even small crumbs can still be Hamotzi Cooking can remove the bread status , depending on size. Yesodos of the Daf • Standard Menachos require three oil applications . • Some (like Ma’afah) do not include all three . • Chalos and Rekikin have distinct preparation methods . • Oil application follows Torah - defined structure , not logic. • פתיתה (breaking) is required but limited in extent . • Kohen Menachos are not broken , since entirely burned. • Cooking bread affects whether it remains Hamotzi or becomes Mezonos . לעילוי נשמת אמי מורתי רות בת הרב מנחם מנדל
