Menachos 44 – Good Morning Raboisai 100 Brachos Every Day The Gemara teaches: חייב אדם לברך מאה ברכות בכל יום Derived from: מה ה’ אלקיך שואל מעמך “ מה ” – read as מאה (100). How do we reach 100? • Morning brachos ( ברכות השחר ) • ברכות התורה • ציצית ותפילין • פסוקי דזמרה • ברכות קריאת שמע • שמונה עשרה (19 × 3) • ברכות הנהנין • ברכת המזון On Shabbos , we lose many brachos (shorter Shemoneh Esrei, no תפילין ). The Amoraim would complete the count with: • Extra foods (fruit, snacks) • בשמים • Answering אמן to חזרת הש”ץ Three Daily Brachos One must say: • שלא עשני גוי • שלא עשני אשה • שלא עשני עבד The reasoning is based on levels of mitzvah obligation. A woman and slave share similar obligations, yet they are distinct statuses — therefore separate brachos. The Chilazon The Gemara describes the חילזון : • דומה לים • ברייתו דומה לדג • עולה אחת לשבעים שנה • מדמו עושים תכלת Because it is rare and difficult to obtain: לפיכך דמיו יקרים The Power of Tzitzis – The Famous Story A man meticulous in tzitzis traveled far to sin with a זונה . She had: • Seven luxurious beds • Six silver • One gold At the critical moment: His ציצית struck him. He withdrew immediately. She demanded explanation. He told her: יש מצוה אחת ושמה ציצית כתיב בה אני ה’ אלקיכם שני פעמים אני הוא שעתיד ליפרע ואני הוא שעתיד לשלם שכר The tzitzis stood as witnesses. She requested his name, yeshiva, and details. Later she: • Divided her wealth • Gave a third to authorities • Gave a third to the poor • Kept a third She came to his yeshiva to convert. The same beds once used for sin became permitted through marriage. Lesson: Even a “light” mitzvah like ציצית protects from grave sin. Borrowed Garments If one borrows a garment: • Under 30 days → פטור מן הציצית • Over 30 days → חייב מדרבנן In Eretz Yisrael: • Mezuzah is required immediately (for יישוב הארץ ) One Tefillin Without the Other If one only has: • של יד • Or של ראש He should wear whichever he has. Originally Rav Chisda suggested otherwise but retracted. Each tefillin is an independent mitzvah. Mitzvah Omissions Failing to wear: • Tefillin → violates 8 positive mitzvos • Tzitzis → violates 5 • Mezuzah → 2 • Duchening (for a Kohen present) → 3 Nisachim – Order of Flour and Wine When bringing a קרבן with מנחה and נסכים : Dispute: Chachamim: Flour first, then wine. Rebbe: Wine before flour. When brought together with the korban → flour first. When brought separately → wine has priority (because of שירה accompanying the wine).
