Menachos 50 – Good Morning Raboisai Missing the Morning Tamid – What Happens? We revisit the Mishnah: If they did not bring the קרבן תמיד in the morning: • Normally, you cannot bring the afternoon Tamid. • Because the pasuk says: “ אֶת הַכֶב ֶׂש הָאֶחָד תַעֲׂשֶה בַבֹּקֶר וְאֵת הַכֶב ֶׂש הַשֵנִי תַעֲׂשֶה בֵין הָעַרְבָיִם ” The second depends on the first. However: This limitation applies only on the first day of inauguration ( חינוך המזבח ). Once the Mizbeach is already operational: If the morning Tamid was missed (even accidentally), the afternoon Tamid may still be brought. Deliberate Omission – A Penalty If the Kohanim deliberately failed to bring the Tamid in the morning: They are penalized. That specific mishmar may not bring the Tamid later that day. But another mishmar may bring it. The punishment is targeted — not a total suspension of avodah. Ketores Is Different Regarding קטרת : If it was not brought in the morning, it may still be brought in the afternoon — even including the missed morning portion. Why? Ketores is not common. Each Kohen only offered Ketores once in his lifetime ( יומא ). It was considered a great זכות and source of wealth. Therefore, there was no concern that Kohanim would neglect it. Inauguration of the Mizbeach HaZahav The Mishnah states: The inauguration of the מזבח הזהב (the golden Mizbeach in the Heichal) occurred with Ketores. Was this in the morning or evening? The pesukim indicate: • Cleaning the Menorah happens in the morning. • Lighting happens in the evening. • Ketores is linked to the lighting. Therefore: The inauguration of the Mizbeach HaZahav occurred in the evening. Inauguration of the Mizbeach HaChitzon By contrast: The outer Mizbeach ( מזבח החיצון ) was inaugurated in the morning with the first Tamid. Thus: • Inner Mizbeach → inaugurated through Ketores (evening). • Outer Mizbeach → inaugurated through Tamid (morning). The Shulchan and Lechem HaPanim The Shulchan was inaugurated with: לחם הפנים — placed on Shabbos. The fact that the inauguration is described as occurring on Shabbos teaches that Lechem HaPanim can only be placed on Shabbos. It cannot be placed on a weekday to initiate sanctity. Can a Yachid Bring Ketores? One time in history, Ketores was offered on the outer Mizbeach: By the נשיאים (tribal leaders). This was a unique, one - time event. From this we infer: A private individual may not bring Ketores voluntarily, neither on the inner Mizbeach nor the outer. Only what the Torah explicitly commands may be brought. Minchas Chavitin of the Kohen Gadol The Kohen Gadol brings a daily Minchah: • עשירית האיפה (one isaron) • Half in the morning • Half in the afternoon He must bring a full isaron, then divide it. He may not bring two separate halves from home. If the Kohen Gadol Dies Midday Case: The Kohen Gadol offered the morning half, then died. The new Kohen Gadol must: • Bring a full isaron, • Offer half, • Burn the remaining half. Additionally: The leftover half of the deceased Kohen Gadol must also be burned. Thus: Two halves are offered, Two halves are burned. Why Burn the Extra? Even though part was not offered: It must wait overnight before being burned. Just like pigul requires waiting overnight before burning, so too here. Since at one moment it was fit for the Mizbeach, it cannot be immediately burned. Baking the Minchah The pasuk includes three expressions: • מחבת – baking • מרבכת – boiling • תופיני – additional baking/frying Three views: 1. Bake → then fry. 2. Fry → then bake. 3. Bake → fry → bake. All agree: It must be done beautifully ( נאה ). Where and When Is It Prepared? All preparation: • Kneading • Shaping • Baking Must occur inside the Azarah. It overrides Shabbos. And even overrides Tumah. Yesodos of the Daf • The second Tamid depends on the first only at inauguration. • Ketores differs from Tamid in leniency. • Each Mizbeach has its own mode of inauguration. • Lechem HaPanim inaugurates the Shulchan only on Shabbos. • A Yachid may not bring voluntary Ketores. • Kohen Gadol’s Minchah must be a full isaron, divided. • Leftover portions require overnight before burning. • Preparation must be in the Azarah and overrides Shabbos.
