Menachos 7 – Good Morning Raboisai Kemitzah Done by a Pasul Person — Can It Be Fixed? The daf continues the discussion of kemitzah performed by someone pasul : • A Yisrael • Onen • Tevul Yom • Mechusar Kippurim • Mechusar Begadim • Someone using the left hand Rav’s key ruling: If a pasul person performs kemitzah, the flour may be returned to the original bowl , and the Kohen may redo the kemitzah properly . This shows: • The act is not automatically fatal • Certain mistakes are repairable The Central Machlokes — What If It Entered a Second Vessel? Critical distinction: • Returned directly to the original bowl → fixable • Placed into a second kli shares → may be too late Two views: • Rav : o Even if the kemitzah was placed into a second vessel, it can still be returned and redone • Rabbi Yossi ben Rabbi Yossi ben Yassan (and others): o Once placed into a second kli , it becomes kadosh o At that point → irreparable The debate hinges on: When exactly does kedushah take effect? Is Kemitzah a Full Avodah or Only Half? A major conceptual question: • Is placing the hand into the flour already a full avodah? • Or does kemitzah become an avodah only after being placed into a kli? Answer developed by the Gemara: Kemitzah is a two - stage avodah : 1. Grasping the flour (partial) 2. Placing it into the kli (completion) Therefore: • A pasul person who only did stage one → damage is not final • Once stage two occurs → the avodah is complete and may be irreparable Why Isn’t the Flour Instantly Kadosh When Returned? Question: • If the bowl is a kli shares , why doesn’t returning the flour make it kadosh and pasul? Answers explored: A. Intent matters • Kedushah via a kli requires daas • If the intent is only to undo the action, kedushah does not take effect B. Where does it land? • If the flour lands: o Above the rim → no kedushah o Inside the vessel proper → kedushah The Gemara carefully analyzes: • Was the bowl overflowing? • Was there a hole left from the kemitzah? • Did it fall back into the hole or onto the top? Small physical differences determine kedushah. “Min b’Min” — Why the Flour Isn’t a Chatzitzah Tosafos introduces an important principle: • Flour landing on flour is min b’min • Therefore: o It is not a separation o It is considered as if it reached the kli itself Yet even so: • Without intent to sanctify, the kedushah still does not take effect Must a Kohen Hold the Bowl During Kemitzah? New question: Does a Kohen need to hold the kli during kemitzah? Proof from Lechem HaPanim : • Bread is placed and removed • No Kohen is described as lifting the table Conclusion: The kli does not need to be held for kemitzah or placement to be valid. This contrasts with: • Kabbalas haDam , where the Kohen must hold the vessel Comparing Kemitzah to Blood Avodah Kemitzah parallels blood service: Korban Minchah Shechitah Kemitzah Kabbalah Placing in kli Holachah Carrying to Mizbeach Zerikah Haktarah Question: • Just as blood cannot be split into two vessels, can kemitzah be split? Conclusion: No. Kemitzah must enter one kli — not two. Rav retracts an earlier leniency on this point. Dipping the Finger — One Vessel Only From inner Chataos and Parah Adumah: • All required sprinklings must come from one vessel • You cannot: o Split blood or water between two kelim This reinforces: Avodah that imitates blood service must follow blood’s rules. Cleaning the Finger Between Sprinklings Clarification from earlier sugyos: • The Kohen must wipe his finger between each hazayah • Leftover blood on the finger: o Is not reused o Each sprinkling requires a fresh dip This fits with: • Kibbus rules • Inner Chatas procedures • Parah Adumah practice Takeaway – Menachos 7 • Kemitzah errors by a pasul person are often fixable • Kemitzah is a two - stage avodah • Once fully completed incorrectly, it may be irreparable • Kedushah via a kli requires intent • A kli does not need to be held for kemitzah • Kemitzah follows blood - service rules • It cannot be split between vessels • Each hazayah requires a fresh action • Physical placement and intent together define outcome לעילוי נשמת אמי מורתי רות בת הרב מנחם מנדל
