Menachos 52 – Good Morning Raboisai Ashes of the Parah Adumah – Is There Me’ilah? The Torah states regarding the אפר פרה אדומה that there is no מעילה (misuse liability). Originally: • If someone used the ashes improperly, there was no me’ilah . • The Torah itself excludes me’ilah from the ashes. However: People began using the ashes disrespectfully (e.g., for medicinal purposes). Chachamim instituted that there is me’ilah — to prevent ביזוי . Later: People became overly afraid to use the ashes even when necessary (e.g., for ספק טומאה ). So Chachamim reverted to the original psak No me’ilah on the ashes. Funding the Par He’elem Davar Shel Tzibbur If Beis Din mistakenly permits a forbidden act and Klal Yisrael sins based on their ruling: They bring a פר העלם דבר של ציבור . Question: Is it funded from: • תרומת הלשכה (regular communal funds), or • A special new collection? Rabbi Shimon – From תרומת הלשכה . Rabbi Yehudah – A new collection is made. Halachah follows the view that it comes from תרומת הלשכה . Do we double those as well? The Debate – Do We Double the Levonah? Regular Kohen Gadol: • One עשרון divided in half. • Two קומצים of לבונה per day (one morning, one afternoon). When he dies: We bring two full עשרונות per day. Do we: • Keep the standard two קומצים total? • Or double to four? The conclusion: We do not double. Even though we double the flour, we keep: • Two קומצים of לבונה (one per offering), • Three לוגים של שמן total (standard amount). Nothing beyond the flour itself is doubled. Final Halachah When the Kohen Gadol dies and no successor is present: • Full עשרון morning, • Full עשרון afternoon, • Standard amount of oil, • Standard two קומצים of לבונה . Only the flour changes. The oil and levonah remain unchanged.
