Zevachim 110 – Good Morning Raboisai Ketores Outside — Mishnah and the Beraisa We open with an apparent contradiction: • One source implies: o A kezayis of ketores offered outside → chayav • Another source implies: o Patur unless a larger shiur is offered The Gemara clarifies: There are two very different ketores offerings , and the halacha depends which one we mean. Two Types of Ketores There are two ketores avodos : 1. Daily Ketores o Offered twice daily o On the Mizbeach HaZahav o Located in the Heichal o Shiur: kezayis 2. Yom Kippur Ketores o Offered once a year o Inside the Kodesh HaKodashim o Shiur: מְלֹא חָפְנָיו (two full handfuls) Key question: If one takes ketores outside , do we follow the daily shiur or the Yom Kippur shiur ? The Machlokes — Is “ מְלֹא חָפְנָיו ” Absolute? One opinion : • מְלֹא חָפְנָיו is absolute • Anything less — even a kezayis — is not considered ketores • Therefore: o Less than two handfuls outside → patur Opposing view (Abaye) : • For liability outside , we follow the standard daily shiur • Since daily ketores is kezayis , bringing a kezayis outside → chayav , even on Yom Kippur The Principle Behind Abaye’s Logic Abaye’s rule: The shiur for liability outside is learned from the regular avodah , not the exceptional one. Just as: • Daily ketores → kezayis • Bringing that kezayis outside → chayav So too: • Ketores of Yom Kippur • A kezayis brought outside → chayav Even though: • The inside requirement on Yom Kippur is much larger Challenge — Why Not Learn from Water Libations? The Gemara challenges Abaye: • Nisuch HaMayim (water libation on Sukkos): o Requires three lugim • If we follow Abaye’s logic: o Even a kezayis of water outside should be chayav But we know: • Less than three lugim → patur Answer: • Ketores is learned from ketores • Water libation is a different avodah • We do not mix shiurim across unrelated services Rav’s Resolution — The Kli Establishes the Shiur Rava resolves the contradiction differently: The dispute is not about Yom Kippur ketores. Both sources refer to daily ketores . The real question: Does placing ketores into a kli shares fix the shiur? • One view : o Once placed in a kli, the entire amount becomes one unit o Liability only if all of it is taken outside • Other view : o The shiur remains kezayis o Even part of it outside → chayav This same logic appears by: • Wine libations • Where different animals require: o 3, 4, or 6 lugim Wine Libations — A Parallel Case Example: • A bull requires 6 lugim • A ram requires 4 • A lamb requires 3 If: • 6 lugim were sanctified in a kli • Only 4 were taken outside Result: • Chayav , because 4 lugim is a valid shiur for a ram But: • Less than 3 lugim → patur • Because no korban uses less than that What If the Shiur Was Lost Midway? Case: • A full kezayis of ketores is taken outside • Then part of it: o Burns o Blows away o Gets lost Question: Is he still chayav? Answer: • Yes. • The moment it exits the Mikdash, it already becomes pasul • Liability is determined at the moment of exit However: • If it was already lacking before exiting → patur Mincha — Kemitzah and Levonah A Mincha requires two matirim : 1. Kemitzah 2. Levonah Cases: • Offering a Mincha without kemitzah outside → patur • If kemitzah was done, but then mixed back in: o It does not become batel o Each kemitzah retains its identity Machlokes: • Is offering one of the two matirim enough? • Rabbanan : o Yes → chayav • Rabbi Elazar : o No → must offer both Pigul Comparison — Partial vs Complete Intent Parallel from pigul: • According to Rabbi Meir : o Pigul intent on one matir is sufficient • According to Rabbanan : o Must have pigul intent on both This frames the question: Does performing one matir remove half the prohibition or merely weaken it? Zerikas Dam — Each Act Is Independent By Chatas : • Four zerikos are required • Yet: o Each zerikah is a complete avodah Proof: • On Yom Kippur: o If blood spills mid - process o A new animal is brought o Previous zerikos remain valid Thus: Each zerikah stands on its own. Nisuch HaMayim — DeOraisa or Halacha L’Moshe MiSinai Final sugya: • Is water libation DeOraisa or Halacha l’Moshe MiSinai? Conclusion: • DeOraisa , according to Rabbi Akiva • Learned from the plural language נִסְכֵיהֶם • Applies only on Sukkos Still unresolved: • Whether it has a fixed shiur (three lugim) • Or whether any amount creates liability outside Takeaway – Zevachim 110 • Ketores liability depends on which ketores and which shiur • Daily ketores = kezayis • Yom Kippur ketores = מְלֹא חָפְנָיו • For outside liability, shiur may follow the standard avodah • A kli can fix the shiur • Loss after exiting does not remove liability • Mincha requires understanding of dual matirim • Each zerikah is an independent act • Nisuch HaMayim is DeOraisa , limited to Sukkos לעילוי נשמת אמי מורתי רות בת הרב מנחם מנדל
